La Viuda
Description

When viewed from above, Tortuga Island presents a captivating sight. The majority of the southern portion of the inundated crater is fractured, featuring two tiny islets battered by the waves. One clear morning in February 2006, I took a flight over the island and let the pilot take me into a rising spiral to get «a better view,» as he put it. I was taking pictures through the open hatch of the luggage hold while strapped to a rope around my waist—not the ideal situation for a drop!

At low tide, La Viuda is hardly visible northeast of Tortuga. The thin, stony finger resembles a black thumb that has been soiled by bird droppings. Dive site of my choice: a veritable aquarium submerged in the northeast current. The drop-off on the sandy crater floor drops down to 40 meters, so it’s definitely not a good option for beginners.

At depths, there exists a singular species of Galapagos fish called the ocean whitefish, or blanquillo (Caulolatilus princeps). Golden ray squads skim the bottom. As one follows the crater’s inner slope, they come across a succession of tiny pinnacles, or rim remnants, interspersed with some places where the current is detectable. A school of barracudas and spotted eagle rays form as clouds of fish appear in the blue. Bat eagle rays occasionally join the ballet. They have a rounded head and an elongated tail. Dorsally, they are olive green, and ventrally, they are white

Nearer the rocks, the scene is dotted with numerous creolefish, bacalao grouper, three-banded butterflyfish, humphead parrotfish, yellowtail surgeonfish, king angelfish, barberfish, and more. La Viuda is home to a variety of sea star species. If you’re lucky, the black, yellow, and blue stripes of the carnivorous nudibranch, Roboastra sp., will show. It is the predator of the smaller, endemic to the Galápagos Islands Tambja mullineri nudibranch, which is striated black and turquoise blue..
